This hotel was developed as an integration and restoration with the Jokyoji temple in Kyoto. Kyoto’s historic temples are often faced with problems such as aging buildings, lack of successors. This project was developed as a new model for passing temples down to future generations. The interior design aims to create a space enclosed within this serene, quiet temple atmosphere. The curated art pieces – repurposed from the temple with newly set Japanese “sumi-e” calligraphy art – express this dance of light and shadow, of black and white monochrome.
