The New Normal

This edited series of mixed media paintings address the struggles with mental health. Mental health problems affect the individual, as well as the family and their home. The problems cause stress, pain, and test the resolve of relationships. However, these struggles are not always apparent to people on the outside. The paintings attempt to present what is initially thought to be an attractive, pastoral depiction of landscapes occupied by buildings and people. Closer examination reveals various tensions, and suggest that perhaps not all is right.

Barry Fitzgerald is a multi-disciplinary artist and visual communicator who loves the challenge of making images that engage intellectually, emotionally, and aesthetically. He uses metaphorical, narrative, and symbolic concepts to explore personal, social, and cultural observations.
